Learn more about the Richard J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship

richard_murphy1 The Richard J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship was established to honor a Leesville Road High School senior who epitomizes Richard Murphy’s high expectations and commitment to visionary leadership, public service, and lifelong learning. Mr. Murphy embodied these traits as a teacher, educator, and administrator during 36 years of service to the Wake County Public School System.

Mr. Murphy was a high school principal for more than 20 years. After a year at East Wake High School and nine years at Sanderson High School, he opened Leesville Road High School in 1993. During more than 10 years as principal, Murphy helped turn Leesville into one of the top-performing schools in North Carolina. His legacy lives on as students and teachers at Leesville remain committed to exemplary performance in all aspects of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Murphy completed his undergraduate degree at Campbell University, where he was the school’s first soccer player to earn All-American team honors (he was also inducted into the Campbell’s Sports Hall of Fame). With an assistantship, he completed his graduate degree at the University of North Carolina. He started his career in education as a teacher at Carnage Junior High and later became an assistant football coach and athletic director at Broughton High School. He was an assistant principal at Athens Drive High School for one year before he went to East Wake.

After his tenure at Leesville, Mr. Murphy served as the Wake County Director of Secondary Programs. He was also proud to sit on the Board of Directors and serve as the President of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Before and after retirement, he enjoyed mentoring future and current principals and serving as a consultant to schools to increase student achievement.

Mr. Murphy died in 2011 after a battle with cancer. Family members; active and retired teachers; fellow administrators; former Leesville students and parents; and former staff members joined together to create this endowed scholarship to honor his legacy. We welcome your support in creating a lasting tribute to his memory.
